Women's Cancer Center of the East Bay

Women's Cancer Center of the East Bay

The Women’s Cancer Center of the East Bay has brought together all of the essential components necessary for a comprehensive world-class breast cancer program.

The biggest difference our cancer program provides to patients is our highly collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to care. The benefit of multidisciplinary care is that you receive multiple medical opinions from a group of specialists, helping you feel confident you have explored all of your options.  Also important is that our center offers the most advanced therapies and latest technologies available to diagnosis and treat breast cancer.

Research shows that a multidisciplinary approach leads to better outcomes with improved quality of life and improved survival rates for women with breast cancer.  The ongoing collaboration and communication between members of your cancer care team makes it possible for your treatment to be coordinated, timely and effective.

Patient Reviews

I am so happy I chose Dr. Svahn and Dr. Eigelberger to be my breast cancer doctors. My experience with them was outstanding – I would not go anywhere else.
— Mary Beth J.
It was very powerful to know that all of my cancer doctors were working together to take care of me. It is because of them I am cancer free!
— Suzanne P.

Our multidisciplinary cancer clinic is designed to evaluate patients with diagnosed breast cancer in a comprehensive, single-day setting to minimize the time between diagnosis and treatment.  On the day of your appointment, you will meet with a breast surgeon, medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist.  Each physician will discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for you based on the consensus opinions of the group and answer all of your questions regarding your cancer.

The  team approach saves you and your family the anxiety and uncertainty of waiting days and weeks between individual appointments.   This single day setting minimizes the time between diagnosis and treatment.  It lets you focus your energy on what’s important: getting well.

Your referring physician is invited to attend the meeting with the multidisciplinary team. Otherwise, we will send our recommended treatment plan to your referring or primary care physician.

At a single appointment, I received an expert care plan from three physicians.

Our physicians offer educational talks in the community to keep you and your caregivers up-to-date on the most current treatment modalities and latest research breakthroughs.

Our reimbursement specialists work closely with you, your insurance company, pharmaceutical companies and foundations to provide helpful guidance and financial support.

On-site Infusion Services

With our patients in mind, we built a spa like infusion suite at our cancer center in Pleasant Hill. Here, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, experimental therapy and supportive therapy are administered to patients in private spaces with room for family members. Each space offers a comfortable reclining chair, soothing music and wireless internet access. Our staff of compassionate chemotherapy certified nurses constantly monitor and assist patients and we staff with the highest nurse to patient ratio possible. Our unique structure allows our doctors and nurses to work closely and cohesively, providing the most coordinated care possible for each patient.

Scalp Cooling with Paxman

The FDA recently issued a clearance for “scalp-cooling systems” that help prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (hair loss) for patients with solid tumor cancers. These scalp-cooling systems provide automated cooling to the patient’s scalp during chemotherapy treatments. Cooling the cells on the scalp reduces blood flow and cell metabolism to this area, which helps to protect the hair follicles from chemotherapy. Scalp cooling can significantly minimize hair loss from certain chemotherapy treatments for men and women with solid tumor cancers such as those associated with breast, prostate, ovarian and uterine.

Diablo Valley Oncology is the first freestanding cancer center in the Bay Area to become certified and trained to offer the Paxman Scalp Cooling System to patients. The NCCN Guidelines now recommend scalp cooling as a category 2A treatment option for patients with invasive breast cancer, you can read the full brief here. To learn more visit paxmanusa.com

Our radiation oncology department uses sophisticated image-guided intensity modulated, stereotactic and three-dimensional conformal radiation techniques. Using advanced linear accelerators equipped with cone-beam CT allows us to image tumors daily before treatment so that we know exactly where to target the radiation. This individualized treatment planning allows for the most precise and effective targeting of the tumor resulting in increased accuracy and reduced side effects.

As part of our continued effort to provide the highest quality radiation oncology services closer to home, we partner with UCSF Radiation Oncology Physics Faculty to provide on-site physics coverage. This program allows us to make use of the resources and experience of UCSF physicists. These physicists assist in developing complex treatment plans and oversee the state-of-the art technology required for optimal radiation delivery.

We bring a whole team of cancer specialists together in one place for one appointment with you and your family. Similar to breast cancer clinics at academic centers, our board certified, multidisciplinary group of physicians work together to develop a customized treatment plan that leads to the best possible outcome for you.

All in one day. All in one place.

Our cancer center is one of the first oncology practices in California to receive the Quality Practice Certification (QOPI) from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. Our radiation department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). As a nationally accredited cancer facility, we stay current with best practices and rapidly advancing treatment guidelines. Our patients receive the same nationally established treatment protocols for breast cancer as they would at any leading academic cancer center.

As a nationally accredited cancer facility, we stay up-to-date with best practices and
